Steve Carruthers – Board-Chair
Steve joined the Board of Directors in October, 2002. Steve lives in Hampton and owns and operates Amara Farms Inc. – a cash crop operation in the Bowmanville-Enniskillen area and Amara Agronomics, an independent consulting company which provides crop management agronomic services to other producers. He is assisted by his five sons.
Rick Carter – Board Vice-Chair
Rick Carter joined the Board of Directors of Farmers’ Mutual Insurance Company Lindsay in 2004. He has served in numerous capacities including Corporate Governance Committee, HR Committee, Nominating Committee and the Audit Committee which he chaired for 2 years.
Rick has also served on many local boards including the Victoria Haliburton Housing Authority: Chair of Finance Committee, Cambridge Street United Church: Chair of Board of Trustees and Property Committee, The Riverside Cemetery: Chair for 2 years, and Chair of a landfill Public Liaison Committee.
Rick has been owner of Blewett Printing in Lindsay for 28 years. He is married with 3 children ages 31, 28 and 17. He spends summers at their family cottage in the Kawarthas where his favourite pastime is waterskiing. During the winter he plays hockey and participates in a cross fit training program.
Mike Whittamore – Past Board-Chair
Mike was appointed to the Board of Directors in October 2001. He is the President of Whittamore Farms Inc. near Markham. Whittamore Farms Inc. grows fresh fruit and vegetables for both the “pick your own” and “farm market” operations. Over 100,000 people visit their farm on an annual basis.
Mike is a past President of the Ontario Berry Growers Association and in 1994 was named the Outstanding Young Farmer for Ontario. He is also a graduate of the Advanced Agricultural Leadership Program.
Cheryl joined our Board of Directors in March 2012. Ms. Craven is a past Vice President of Human Resources at SickKids Hospital. Before joing SickKids, she was Vice President of Human Resources at IBM Canada Ltd.
Cheryl is a proven and effective industry leader who enjoys working to support and lead change, build relationships and develop and engage people.
Gord James was appointed to the Board of Farmers’ Mutual in October 2009. Gord had a long career with The Quaker Oats Co. of Canada Ltd., where he held senior positions in Marketing, Finance and as head of the company.
Gord has been active on boards of both for-profit and not-for-profit organizations such as Recapture Metals Ltd., Peterborough Regional Health Centre and PRHC Foundation. He is currently volunteering with the YWCA Crossroads Safehaven Campaign and the Canadian Cancer Society.
Gord and spouse Olivia live in Peterborough.
Gord proudly joined the Board of Directors in October 2009. Gord and spouse Darlene live in Beaverton with their two children.
Gord is also a past founder and owner of a franchise sandwich shop and a past owner and Vice-President of Lodwick Transport, a medium sized temperature controlled transportation company. Gord currently operates as an independent consultant within the transportation industry and owns two land and building management companies.
Terry joined Farmers’ Mutual in February 1985. He served as Company President from 1993 to 1995 and from 2003 to 2004.
From 1994 to March 2004 he served on the Board of Directors of the Farm Mutual Reinsurance Plan Inc. and served as Board Chairman from 2001 to 2002.
Anne-Marie Thomas joined the Board of Directors in March 2013 and serves on the Audit and Investment Committees. Ms. Thomas brings investment, risk management and governance expertise to the Board drawing on senior executive experience from across the financial services industry including as Senior Vice President and Head of Investments for one of Canada’s 10 largest pension funds.
Anne-Marie currently provides advisory services on investment strategy and governance matters and serves on the Audit Committee of the Toronto 2015 Pan/Parapan American Games.
Randy joined the Board of Directors of Farmers’ Mutual Insurance Company Lindsay in 2013.
Randy is a graduate of Seneca’s Aviation and Flight Technology program and is currently an international corporate pilot.
As Vice President of an IT consulting company for 15 years, Randy has provided consulting services to many Fortune 1000 companies in North America; he also serves as President of a company which provides technology for use in the cockpits of corporate aircraft throughout the world. In 2009, Randy diversified his interests by founding a successful excavating and marine construction company located in Port Bolster, Ontario.
Randy lives in Beaverton, Ontario with his wife Kim.
Tim Shauf – President and Chief Executive Officer
Tim has his B.A. in Business Administration and has been involved in the mutual insurance industry since 1992.
He served as the Manager of another farm mutual company in Ontario from 1994 to August, 1999 and on the Board of Directors of the Farm Mutual Reinsurance Plan from March, 1996 until June, 1999. In March, 2002 Tim was elected to the Board of Directors of the Ontario Mutual Insurance Association.
Tim and his family live in Lindsay.
Bob Neilson – Vice President of Finance and CFO
Bob Nielson joined the company in June 2009. He is a CPA, CA with over 25 years in senior financial roles in international companies that include Fisher Gauge, KeepRite and Price Waterhouse. Bob brings his experiences and successes from manufacturing, processing, distribution and service organizations with lean and continuous improvement cultures. Other experiences include M&A, valuations, re-organizations and divestitures.
Bob enjoys sports, travel and voluntary positions with non-profit and church organizations. Bob currently resides in Peterborough with his wife Eileen.
